Ƽġ¾Æ³ª Áú º¤(1982³â, µ¶ÀÏ º£¸¦¸° Å»ý)Àº ÆÄ¸®¿Í º£¸¦¸°¿¡ °ÅÁÖÇϸç ÀÛ¾÷À» Çϰí ÀÖ´Ù. ¼¼°è¸¦ ŽÇèÇÏ´Â º¤ÀÇ µå·ÎÀ×Àº ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ °¡½ÃÀûÀÎ ¿ªÇÒÀ» µå·¯³»´Â ¿¹¼úÀû ¸Å°³Ã¼ÀÌ´Ù. Artist Statement |
If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are the others?
Tiziana Jill Beck (b. 1982 in Berlin, Germany) lives and works in Paris and Berlin.
For Beck drawing is a medium to explore the world and make her position within it visible. On paper Beck questions the human condition including the phenomena of contemporary life and people¡¯s relationships within the modern society. Taking inspiration from literature, anthropology, art history and observations of daily life, Beck creates new compositions and meanings within her drawings, allowing unique contexts and narratives to unfold.
Under the exhibition title ¡®If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are the others?¡¯ Beck uses her artistry and experience to assemble a new collection of artwork made from crayon, collage, paint, ink, and fabric. This latest body of work is influenced by the research and discoveries she made during her 10 month stay in South Korea during 2014-15 as part of an artist scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
and the artist residency TEMI in Daejeon.
Intrigued by Korean everyday life aesthetics, Beck has created a fabric collage series titled ¡®Wrapping ghosts¡¯. These large mask-like collages explore and play with stories,
mythology and symbols of the past whilst incorporating the idea of embodied spirits in
everyday objects like the traditional Korean wrapping cloth known as a Bojagi.
Using an old technique of scratching lines on heavy metal plates, Beck has produced an etching series titled ¡®Trophy Fellows¡¯. This set of etchings concerns itself with questions of representation and the meaning of trophies in today¡¯s society. Can a trophy develop its own sense of independent existence when it is taken away from its dusty cabinet home?
The drawing, titled¡®self-portrait in Seoul¡¯ describes Beck¡¯s own emotional state in Korea. Choosing within the drawing to represent herself through the anatomy of a dog (the artists Chinese zodiac sign) Beck overlaps two opposing fields, one being of analysis and scientific representation and the other being the artist's mood and fascination in astrology.
Finally, in the ongoing drawing series titled ¡®If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are the others?¡¯ whose title is drawn from Voltaire¡¯s French novel Candide (1759), Beck deals with notions of identity, place, borders and movement. Using various approaches with a sense of improvisation and spontaneity she recreates on paper her own unfolding imaginative universe.
